When we are stressed by matters related to finances, private life, problems at work, in general we are not left nervous for some reason, in such a situation, are tranquilizers the only option?
Well, there are many natural substances, medicinal plants and herbs that will help us reduce stress and calm our emotions, and most importantly they are usually safe and have beneficial effects on our body.
It should be remembered, however, that even natural substances of plant origin can affect our body in a certain way, so if we are not sure about the safety of their use, we are already burdened with certain diseases or react allergically to certain ingredients, it is advisable to consult a doctor.
Stress in our body can cause fatigue, dysfunction of organs in our body, and in the case of prolonged exposure the consequences can be insomnia, hypertension, ulcers, in general the list of diseases to which prolonged stress contributes is long and disturbing.
It is worth drawing from nature, it is full of plants and substances that can protect us from the negative effects of stress on our health and beauty.
So what should we do when our body can no longer cope with stress?
Adaptogens are the answer.
Plant adaptogens – substances of plant origin that naturally defend our body from the effects of severe, long-term stress and strengthen our immunity to external factors that cause stress. These are those plants that do not cause excessive stimulation at the same time do not block the normal functions of the body, they have a balancing effect on the normalization of our body functions.
Among the adaptogenic plants recognized by science are ginseng, Chinese citronella, Gotu Kola and also Arctic root.
Rhodiola rosea, or Arctic root(Rhodiola rosea)
My favorite plant, which I myself use regularly, known in Eastern Europe and Asia.
Naturally found in very harsh, extreme conditions, which allowed it to develop mechanisms to survive in extremely hostile environments.
Arctic root has been used in folk medicine as a means to help reduce stress but also to improve concentration and mental performance.
Many students, people who are required to exert increased mental effort during the period when they need to improve their performance in the process of acquiring knowledge, use this plant.
This plant also protects the cardiovascular system from the effects of stress. It also helps renew the reserves of an exhausted body.
Gotu Kola, Asian mustard(Centella asiatica) is found in tropical and subtropical regions (including Madagascar, South and Central Africa, China and India).
This plant also has an adaptogenic effect, i.e. we become less susceptible to stress and at the same time improve our mood and reduce nervous tension.
It also facilitates concentration and assimilation of new information. It is helpful for increased physical and intellectual exertion and concentration problems. It is also used in the treatment of skin diseases, prevention of premature signs of aging, and raises energy levels. It can be used by the elderly, but each case is good when consulted individually with a doctor.
Used in Ayurveda as a means of supporting brain function, blood circulation, skin condition and wound healing.
Ginseng (Panax ginseng)
Increases energy levels in the body, improves the body’s ability to exert itself and improves the functioning of the immune system. There are many varieties of this plant.
It also increases the ability to concentrate and remember. It is good for mental and physical fatigue. It counteracts sleep disorders and neurosis. It has an anti-stress effect and increases the vitality of the body.
It should not be taken before bedtime as it has a stimulating effect.
Due to a rather long list of contraindications, not everyone can enjoy the benefits of this plant.
Chinese citronella(Schisandra chinensis) is a plant whose medicinal properties have been used for a very long time in the Far East. In folk medicine, the seeds and berry-like fruits are used most often.
The plant is used in states of physical and mental exhaustion and also as a strengthening agent when the body is weakened. It improves physical and mental condition.
It is a well-known agent with stimulating properties. Based on recent laboratory studies, it has been confirmed that some of its components (e.g.: lignans) have strong antioxidant properties and protect the liver. The plant has a tonic effect on the nervous and respiratory systems, as well as a strengthening effect.
Chamomile (Chamomilla recutita)
This is a very popular plant. In addition to its numerous medicinal uses, it has a mildly sedative effect. It is often used for anxiety and insomnia. Regularly drinking chamomile infusion can have a positive effect on our mood, improving our mood, reducing fears and anxieties. It has a relaxing and calming effect on us.
Melissa (Melissa officinalis)
This plant has quite a wide range of uses, helpful in the treatment of the digestive system, but primarily has a strengthening and calming effect on the nervous system. It is also used as an aid for insomnia, relieving depressive states.

The infusion of this plant, thanks to the high content of theine in its composition, has a comprehensive effect on us. It stimulates and refreshes, causes an increase in mental abilities and improves the physical performance of the body, also facilitates the learning process, and improves associative abilities and concentration. Thanks to its antioxidant content, it can slow down the aging process in our body. It is also known to have a positive effect on the appearance of our skin and increase our body’s overall immunity.
Common hops(Humulus lupulus)
We associate it mainly with beer, and it is a highly valued medicinal plant. Hops cones are used for medicinal purposes. They contain volatile oil, resins, flavonoids and tannins. Specifically, the essential oils contained in the cones have calming properties. In folk medicine, hops cones extract is used for anxiety and nervous tension.
Valerian(Valeriana officinalis)
Reduces anxiety and nervous tension, but causes drowsiness. It relaxes the body. It should be taken in the evening, not during the day when you plan to be physically and mentally active. It is usually taken in the form of drops or tincture. However, its bad smell does not allow everyone to use it. A very effective substance for combating insomnia. It is often used with other herbs, such as lemon balm and chamomile.
Lavender(Lavandula angustifolia)
It is not only a valued plant in the cosmetic industry. Lavender oil contains very valuable aromatic compounds that have a beneficial effect on the human nervous system.
